Fish Oil or Fresh Fish for PONS ?

Many owners think that offering fish oil will help improve the health of their PONS. However, there are some considerations which need to be explored. Excessive dosage of fish oil can have adverse allergic and side effects on the immune system.. Further, fish oil can be problematic in many conditions and hence it is necessary to examine fish oil supplements cautiously. Owners need to consult their veterinarian for the exact dosage of fish oil in order to receive accurate advice.

Various types of fish which can be a good source of fish oil are mackerel, rainbow trout, lake trout, halibut, herring, sea bass, sardines, swordfish, oysters, albacore tuna, blue fin tuna, yellow fin tuna, turbot, pilchards, anchovies and salmon. The most common names among these for obtaining fish oil are albacore tuna, herring, mackerel, sardines, lake trout and salmon. The type of fish used and the purity standards followed in refining the oil influence the quality of fish oil.

The health benefits of fish oil include its ability to aid in heart diseases,  weight loss,  anxiety,  immunity, cancer, pregnancy, diabetes, inflammation, arthritis, IBD,  eye disorders, macular degeneration, fur, skin care,  ulcers, fertility, etc. for canines.

Owners may compare these benefits to fresh fish, such as salmon.

The health benefits of offering fresh salmon include the following:

  • Muscles, Tissues, Enzymes, Hormones etc.: Proteins or amino acids are essential components of our cells, tissues, enzymes, hormones and every other body part. The proteins from salmon (and most other fishes) are easy digestible and easily absorbed into the body. They do neither have any adverse side effects nor contain carcinogenic compounds, like other meats do. Salmons are also source of good fat (omega-3 fatty acids) which also plays a vital role in keeping your PON healthy. Salmon is also rich in some of the very essential minerals like iron, calcium, selenium and phosphorus and vitamins like A, B and D. Selenium, which is very necessary for building up of tissues, fur, nails etc., is best obtained from animal proteins and among which, salmon is one of the best.
  • Cardio-Vascular Health: While the Omega-3 Fatty Acids help reduce cholesterol, maintain flexibility of arteries and veins and strengthen cardiac muscles, the essential amino acids repair damages to the cardio-vascular tissues..
  • Metabolism: The Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin-D and selenium, together help increase influence of insulin, thereby facilitating absorption of sugar and consequent lowering of blood sugar level. If your PON has Diabetic ancestors, this will prove a great help.
  • Eye Care: Again, the Omega-3 fatty acids and amino acids help prevent macular degeneration, dryness, loss of vision.
  • Brain & Nerves: The Omega-3 fatty acids increase efficiency of the brain, improves memory. In company with the amino acids, vitamin-A & D and selenium, these fatty acids protect the nervous system from aging conditions.
  • Other Benefits: Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation of the arteries and digestive system, reduce chances of cancer of  kidneys etc., improve skin, add shining to eyes, skin, fur. The fatter the salmon, the more nutritious and healthy it is. It is a good protein supplement for Senior PONS being easy digestible. .

Ultimately, the final decision is up to PON owners, however, I would personally lean towards fresh salmon and other fish in order to avoid dosage issues, and purity issues. Visitors to PON Digest are encouraged to update us on decisions. Good luck !
