Your Family PON

. If you're like most typical PON families, your children will probably spend the most time with your new PON puppy. This is why it's very important you teach your child how to take proper care of your new family member. Here are a few basic rules to teach them:

*   Explain that dogs, especially puppies, need nutrition each day for energy and proper growth. Sometimes smaller children can be too eager to help. Explain to your children why we don't feed dog's certain foods such as sweets and chocolates. Holidays are high risk times and children need to know they are not doing their family PON a favor by sneaking cooked bones, gravy rich foods and other Thanksgiving foods to their pet.

2. Being gentle to your PON is another lesson to teach children. Younger children, particularly under the age of four, have a tendency to be rough with animals. With a new PON, you may not know his temperament very well or how he may react to your child's curiosity. Lead by example. Show your child how to be kind to animals. Show them how to gently pet them on the head or back and that hitting or pulling can hurt your PON. Don't allow behavior which can lead to rescue situations for your PON in the event your PON reacts to teasing, or pulling in a negative manner. Prevention is always the best strategy.

3. Teach your child about the importance of exercise with your family PON. In order for your PON to stay healthy he must move around and play. If your PON is not overpowering, let your child walk him/her with a leash. Another fun activity for exercise is fetch. Let your child throw a ball or stick for your PON to chase. This is lots of fun for both participants and such games may last hours on end. Smiles !

4. If you have a rambunctious puppy, make sure your child doesn't leave things lying around. PON puppies love to chew on whatever they can sink their teeth into. If they see your daughter's favorite dolly on the floor, or your son's tennis shoe, your PON puppy will show no reserve. They will usually go for these items immediately. Tell your child that your puppy is too young to understand, and that until he gets older, be extra careful about leaving toys and clothing lying around the house.

5. Keep bathroom doors closed on a regular basis. PONS (and all dogs) are notorious for drinking from the toilet bowl. Prevent emergency visits to the vet by keeping the bathroom door firmly closed to surprise visits.

6. Remind your children that if your new PON doesn't keep to the scheduled potty breaks, he may find an area in the house. Train your new PON to use the bathroom outside,  and explain the importance of  scheduled times.

7. Make a wall chart for puppy activities. For example, if your children are forgetful about remembering to feed your PON or take it out for breaks, it would be a great idea to make a chart of daily activities. Let your children mark a check when the task has been completed.

Your children may not tend to realize the importance of taking care of a new PON, but with parental guidance, they will develop into good PON owners. It is a good strategy to compliment your children when they take on responsibility and follow through with it. Taking care of PONS is a big responsibility. Let your children know that in the same way they have to be taken care of by parents, their PON has to be taken care of as well. Our PONS depend on us everyday and we can't let them down !
